SUMMARY

The Salar de Atacama is three thousand square kilometres of broken salt, with the Andes standing along one edge of it and nothing whatsoever along the other. Low altitude and an easy drive, but the salt crust is sharp and uneven, so closed boots matter here more than anywhere else in the series.

water on the salar is seasonal — tell us when you are coming and we will tell you honestly what it will be doing. If the surface is dry, the composition simply changes: the crust becomes the subject, and it holds shadow like nothing else you will ever put in a frame.

WHAT WE BRING

A professional guide and a driver who knows which tracks hold after dark. A professional photographer, with a briefing beforehand to plan every detail of the excursion. Cameras, tripods and lenses if they are needed.— Hot food and drinks. Warm layers, chairs and blankets. Red headlamps for everyone.

If you have never photographed at night, we will set the camera up with you, explain what every setting is doing and why, and stay beside you until you are working on your own. Nobody here will make you feel slow. This is the easiest of our three sites to photograph well on a first attempt — a still reflection does half the work for you.

If you shoot professionally, this is the horizon site. We position you for Licancabur, we know where the water sits at each time of year, and we plan the hour around the galactic core rather than around convenience. Tell us the frame you are after and we will put you in front of it.
